SG Goes to the FIRS World Championships 2003

For the first time ever, a representative team from Singapore took part in the FIRS World Championships (Womens) 2003. This event was held in Pisek, Czech Republic, June 20 - 25, 2003.

A total of ten teams took part: USA, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Great Britain, Japan and Singapore.
Teams were seeded according to the final national team placement at the 2002 FIRS World Championships, using a serpentine placement for equality of the groups. Team Singapore was allocated to Pool B and played against Australia, Czech Republic, USA, Great Britain and Japan.

Although our Singapore girls were unable to attain a good ranking, they impressed with their determination and fighting spirit.

"A very competent team from Singapore competed in the Women’s Championship, which was the first such appearance by any Singapore skaters in FIRS world championships. While finishing last, surprised by the proficiency of the other teams, these ambitious young athletes returned home with the resolve to improve their hockey skills and return next June to the 2004 FIRS World In-line Hockey Championships in London, Ontario, Canada, intending to better Singapore’s position in the world in-line hockey standings."
- Mr Georg Pickard, President of President of Roller In-line Hockey Committee (CIRILH)

Words from the Coach

Carl Georg Kuechler, Coach of the SG Women's Team, has a few words to say on the performance of the girls and a lesson he would like us all to learn:

"The World Championships was a very painful and emotional experience. On certain occasions I could feel the stress and pressure which the girls were undergoing. Especially before the game against Team USA, when I went into the change room I could feel the tension.. I think this was the best game the Team had in the World Championships

Generally I can say that, the girls never gave up and fought hard until the last whistle.

I also hope that the girls realized that Inline Hockey is a Sport, and will take Inline Hockey more seriously in the future.

Plans for further development include doubling all the skills of the girls, so that they are able to attain middle ranking at the next World Championships in Canada, 2004. We will develop a professional Management and 10 month training program for the players.

Girls, Team Spirit means to play and to think as a team, personal ego has no place there. We should be more self-critical and have Faith in each other, Support each other. We don’t have to like each other, but we should always support the Team and the country we are representing.

It’sa pleasure and honour to be the coach of this team, as I have the chance to grow together with this team, and be part of the team."

- Carl Georg Kuechler
